6 Greenwich Village No Fee Apartment Rentals We Like

Greenwich Village, the original beatnik and then hippy haunt of New York. Back in my days as a traditional real estate broker, I used to speak with newcomers to New York looking for an apartment for rent in Manhattan. When I’d ask them to be a bit more specific about where they’d like to live, Greenwich Village would almost always come up first on their list.

At the time, people thought that if beatniks and hippies lived there, it must be an inexpensive neighborhood. Today, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Greenwich Village is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in New York.

If you’ve looked for rental in New York, you’d notice that Greenwich Village is very low rise, full of walk-up buildings, brownstones, and townhouses. These buildings both give the neighborhood its charm – and also make it so very expensive, which is an excellent reason to consider a no fee apartment if you’re thinking of Greenwich Village.

This building was constructed by Ogden L. Mills, a former Secretary of the Treasury, in 1899 as a workers’ hostel. At the time the rooms cost 10 cents for one night. Theodore Dreiser stayed for 20 cents a night. Later, when it was a seedy hotel, Allen Ginsberg lived here in 1951.
Don’t worry — the building was renovated in 2000 for your comfort.
If you’re looking to experience the Village side of Manhattan, you can’t do better than this building. It’s on a street that features in many folk songs of the 60s (Simon & Garfunkle, Bob Dylan) and where the Mamas and the Papas composed “California Dreaming” one cold New York winter.
