When I started RDNY.com’s Pinterest boards, I was looking for a way to share with everyone the enormous potential of New York apartments to be unique and extraordinarily beautiful homes. Sure, it’s easy to create a beautiful apartment when there are interesting or unique architectural feature to the space, such as arched windows, exposed brick, and fireplaces with beautiful mantels. But most apartments don’t have those distinguishing features.
So it depends on you to make something special of the space. Fortunately, when you see good ideas, it sparks your own creativity. You don’t have to follow anyone else s ideas, you can let others show you the way forward, and then you add your own touches to make it yours. I’ve collected hundreds of examples of beautiful, small spaces on our Pinterest board “Beautiful Small Apartment Interiors“. Click the link and visit that web page. Let your mind start churning with your own creative ideas.
There is a notion that larger New York City apartments more easily lends themselves to being beautiful. Not true! A larger apartment can easily hold more “stuff” and clutter, but by themselves, they aren’t any more beautiful.
I prefer smaller apartments. Think of it this way… With a small apartment, you have to resist the temptation to own lots of junk. Once you get past the desire to own lots of stuff, you can free yourself to be more selective in what you own. If you have room for only one sofa, buy a good one. I didn’t say an expensive one, although it might turn out to be expensive. Just make sure it is a quality sofa that makes a statement. The same with your few chairs or your table. Buy the ones that say something special. Ask yourself if you’d want that table or chairs to be passed down to your children, or if you’d be just as happy throwing them out after a few years. Look for the good stuff, the stuff you’d want to pass down to your kids.
Decorating a studio apartment can be a challenge – but it can also be thoroughly rewarding. Your studio is your crib. It’s your space. It’s your refuge from the harsh world. Make it the place where you love spending your time.
